Tour of George Washington’s Mansion and Home

Learn from Washington’s best autobiography – his home. Not only is the Mansion one of the finest examples of American colonial architecture, but it was a reflection of his character and personality, as well as his vision for our new nation. Tours can conclude with an optional wreath-laying ceremony at George Washington’s tomb.

Note: Tour duration is about 1 hour, available 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. during the winter and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. during the spring, summer, and fall. Tours during regular hours are included in the program cost. Private evening tours after-hours are available for an additional cost.

Tour of Rare Books & Manuscripts Collection

Step behind the “exhibition glass” and view firsthand authentic books and documents from Washington’s own library, learning more about the character of the leader through his own words and collection.

Note: Tours of the special collection are 30 minutes unless group is over 50 people.

Tour of George Washington’s Gristmill & Distillery

Located just down the road from the Library and Main Estate, George Washington’s Gristmill & Distillery are not only open for tours but full operational. Tours begin in the Gristmill, where Historic Trades staff demonstrate how the Gristmill operates and discuss Washington’s entrepreneurship and business management of his estate operations. The tour concludes at the Distillery, where guests learn about the 18th century process of distilling whiskey and learn about Washington’s profitable distilling efforts.

Note: Tour duration is about 45 minutes. Gristmill & Distillery site is located about 2-3 miles down the road from the Main Estate and is open from April – October.
